REHABILITATION AND EXPANSION OF THE SCHOOL (KREISES HERZOGTUM LAUENBURG) | MÖLLN

Facility Buildings, 2.014

1. Chaos

The original building, subject of this competition, has been analyzed based on the needs and guidelines established by the organization, obtaining a quite complex educational set, characterized by a large number of routes between different spaces and an eclectic image set to through the accession of different buildings in shape, design and type.

This apparent architectural chaos could lead to difficulties in targeting the users inside the building to access the numerous rooms of which it consists. Therefore, given the magnitude of the complex, is considered a priority to establish a functional diagram simpler and more understandable of the building for any user.

2. Main collector

The main goal of the action is simply to generate the required buildings from an integrative and organizer approach of the complex in which they are located. To do this, one of the main keys is to introduce a large east-west corridor that will become the backbone of the project communications and will absorb primary transits, from which lead users to the different uses of the building. That’s the reason why the current access is set as a starting point, being the benchmark from which to organize the whole design. Key to this is to become an open space thereby enhance its dynamism and flexibility, creating a new exhibition and meeting space for users.

3. Closing the Plot

As for the new building required, it was decided to occupy the southwest corner of the plot in an attempt to close the complex, offering an element able to contain all existing buildings and enhance the coherence of this educational complex.

Thus, the uses required are located along a new linear building around a large patio that allows us to bridge the differences in height in the topography of the plot, to ensure natural ventilation and lighting workshops and design working spaces as comfortable as possible.

4. Scale

It is very important to avoid creating an urban barrier, staggering the intervention by lowering the maximum height to the street in the south of the plot, achieving a scale that let us maintain a closer and human image of the building. Everything focused on creating a new access capable of accommodating users naturally and smoothly.

Regarding the facade, a more opaque outer skin towards the edge of the plot is established, providing a diffused image from the outside of the plot, while the building is opened towards the inside thereof by using transparent facades and linked to the transit spaces. Then, the user is prompted to enter the interior of the plot and to participate in the building and direct users to the main corridor.

5. Center of gravity

This proposal, not only tends to simplify the model and close the current building, but organizes around the services building (Trakt K) as a great social reference, located in the center of gravity of the plot and, from now, of the building.  This is achieved to build this unique building as a key element of the project, directly connected to the central corridor and outer space, enhancing the different indoor-outdoor connections and the interaction among users.

6. Outdoor spaces

The plot on which the educational building is located has a large area, which allows the existence of large outdoor spaces to serve buildings, establishing the concept of small town. This means it can be understood as a minimum urban unit, generating internal communication pathways and recreational and social interaction space.

7. Connections: Organization

As a conclusion, the project seeks to order the inner workings of the buildings as well as organizing a well-connected and interesting outdoor space. Thus, the model is simplified , finding a structure based on several buildings connected to the central corridor as a comb, surounded by a continuous but well-defined outer space, establishing infinite relationships between interior and exterior . Designed from an urban development approach in which create a hierarchy for connections and outdoor spaces.
